Hello, I’m Lisa.
As a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, Zen Buddhist, & Mama,
I teach women how to listen to and connect with their bodies so they can learn how to let go of old patterns that no longer serve them – and thrive.
Everything is interconnected.
This is why my approach with clients is holistic. It begins with determining what foods you need to fuel and nourish your body-mind, and also folds in mindfulness, non-toxic living, movement, sleep, stress awareness, and self-care practices.
After training in a Zen Buddhist monastery for 5 years, I learned to embody the practice of being able to give attention, notice, and listen to what is happening in my body. All of my actions and decisions are now guided by this bodily knowing.
Learning to truly listen to and trust my body, led me out of an intense & stressful nine-year career as a financial planner, and into years of meditation, bodywork, yoga, somatic therapy, mindful eating, experimenting with food and herbs, and going back to school to study holistic nutrition.
Food is medicine.
This became very clear to me early on in my own healing journey.
At the Zen Center, we were collectively developing a cuisine that was designed to support the body-mind. The focus was on organic, vegetarian, local, homemade whole foods in lineage of Deborah Madison. I spent those years learning how to properly prepare nourishing meals for a community of 10-50 practitioners, which I now fold into my practice in working with clients.
While I was at the Zen Center, I was also under a lot of stress. It’s not all just meditation, bliss, and insights. The daily schedule is rigorous – starting with meditation at 4:30am (3:30am in the winter) and ending at 9pm. Practicing deeply in this way puts you into the fire. You can no longer turn away or distract yourself from your own mind. You must do the work. Through my commitment to self-care and trust in the practice, I finally learned how to truly take care of myself. How to listen to my body. How to rest. How to receive. How to still the mind. These are now practices I will share with my clients.
Upon leaving the Zen Center, I knew I wanted to find a way to help others learn how to truly take care of themselves. I believe this begins with food. Food is the foundation upon which everything else is built – including movement, sleep, self-care, bodywork, and other somatic practices. This led me to Portland (a hub of natural medicine) to formally study holistic nutrition.
With a focus on bio-individuality, I help clients determine what foods work for their body, where to source these foods, how to properly prepare them, and how to eat mindfully so that they can live nourishing and connected lives.
